A platform for millions of refunds

I built the new platform Refunds teams use to create, configure and track refund flows across countries. Today it processes millions of refunds.

The context

At Mercado Libre and Mercado Pago, refunds are processed in batches across several countries and through different payment processors. Not all of them go through on their own: some need a person to review them, adjust them or resubmit them. The Refunds teams needed a new tool to manage that whole process.

What I built

In my second year at OpsIT, I built the new platform, working closely with the backend team and the teams that own the APIs it integrates with.

  • Refund flows: create them and customize each one’s configuration.
  • Manual handling: work through the refunds that can’t be processed automatically.
  • Batches: track every refund batch and act on its different execution outcomes.
  • Processors: templates for each payment processor (Visa, Mastercard…).

The result

A platform that was complex to build but is robust for the operations teams who manage refunds across countries. Today it processes millions of refunds efficiently.

After launch, I kept working in the same domain, now on the backend too, building Go verticals for Refunds.
